How do I personalize emails using variables?

Updated Nov 2, 2026

A token is a contact field name in double braces, for example {{first_name}}. It is replaced with each contact's value when the email is sent.

Steps

  1. In the sequence editor, place the cursor in the subject or body.
  2. Open Personalization and choose a field. You can also type the token yourself.
  3. Click Preview to see it filled in with a contact's data.

Available fields

  • first_name, last_name, email, company, title, job_title, phone, location, industry, linkedin_url, icebreaker
  • custom1 to custom6
  • {first_name}, ${first_name} and [% first_name %] also work.

Rules

  • Write field names exactly as shown. A token with an unknown name is left in the email as typed.
  • There is no fallback text for empty fields, so make sure every contact has a value for the fields you use.
  • Contact values are inserted as plain text.
  • Emails sent through the API are sent exactly as provided, without tokens.
