How do I connect my own SMTP server?

Updated Nov 2, 2026

MailRush sends through your mailbox's SMTP server and reads replies and bounce reports from its IMAP inbox. Both logins are tested before the account is saved.

Before you start

  • The SMTP and IMAP server names, ports, security settings, usernames and passwords from your email provider.
  • SMTP and IMAP access turned on at your provider. Some providers require an app password instead of your normal password.

Steps

  1. Go to Email Accounts and click + Add Email Account.
  2. Select Use My Own Email and click Set Up SMTP/IMAP.
  3. Under SMTP Details, enter the SMTP Username (usually the email address), Email Address, First Name and Last Name (your sender name), Password, SMTP Host, SMTP Port and Encryption.
  4. Under IMAP Details, enter the IMAP Host, IMAP Port, IMAP Username, IMAP Password and Encryption. All fields are required.
  5. Click Connect & Save. MailRush signs in to SMTP and then IMAP. The account is saved only if both work, and you see "SMTP account saved."

Choosing the encryption

  • SSL (implicit TLS): encrypted from the start. Providers usually use port 465 for SMTP and 993 for IMAP.
  • TLS (required STARTTLS): the connection must upgrade with STARTTLS, usually port 587 for SMTP and 143 for IMAP. MailRush never falls back to sending your password unencrypted.
  • None: SMTP still upgrades with STARTTLS when the server offers it; IMAP connects without encryption.
  • The form starts with SMTP port 465 / SSL and IMAP port 143 / None. Change them to your provider's values.

Gmail and Google Workspace

  • Connecting with Google sign-in is not available. Connect Gmail or Google Workspace mailboxes with Use My Own Email, using the SMTP and IMAP settings and the app password your Google account provides.

Troubleshooting

"SMTP validation failed. Please check your settings."
The SMTP login failed. See "How do I fix SMTP authentication failures?".
"IMAP validation failed: …"
SMTP worked but the IMAP login failed. See "How do I troubleshoot IMAP authentication errors?".
"Email address is already in use by another organization"
The address is connected to another MailRush organization. Remove it there first, or open a support ticket.
"This field is required."
Fill in every SMTP and IMAP field, including the IMAP password.
