How do I test my SMTP connection?

Updated Nov 2, 2026

Test authentication signs in to the account's SMTP and IMAP servers with the saved details. No email is sent.

Steps

  1. Go to Email Accounts.
  2. Open the menu (⋮) of the account and choose Test authentication.
  3. Read the results for Email sending (SMTP) and Reply inbox (IMAP): Passed, Failed or Not checked, each with an explanation.

What the results mean

  • "Authentication succeeded." The login works.
  • "The mail server rejected authentication." The username or password is not accepted.
  • "Could not connect to the mail service." or "The mail service address could not be resolved." Check the host name and port.
  • "The secure connection could not be established." Check the encryption setting.
  • "The mail service did not respond in time." Try again shortly.
  • "Finish DNS setup for this account before testing authentication." A MailRush email account needs its DNS records first.
  • A successful test does not guarantee email delivery. To see a real email arrive, send a preview test from a campaign.
